Balclutha

Balclutha is a town about halfway between Dunedin and Invercargill, lying towards the end of the Clutha River. Its residents rely heavily on coal for domestic heating. Consequently, the town’s nightly emissions are some of the highest in the region.

Spatial studies show that there appears to be considerable variation in air quality across Balclutha during the winter evenings. The highest PM10 values are found in the hill suburbs to the northeast and southwest of town. Steady, downriver winds help move pollutants out of the low-lying central part of town.
